Boomer Lit Friday (excerpt 4)

Boomer Lit Friday is a project by a Goodreads group to introduce readers to works of fiction of particular interest to Baby Boomers. These books feature characters in their fifties and sixties dealing with real life issues.  Every Friday the Boomer Lit Friday Blog we can tour the blogs which offer a selection of short Boomer Lit excerpts for readers to enjoy.

I have been sharing excerpts from The Crone Club.  This is now the monthly read for the the Goodreads Boomer Lit group.

“Oh no, I don’t believe this!” George almost shrieked.
“What’s the matter now?”
“It’s happening again! Twice in one journey! We’ve just acquired another tail-gater and he’s even started flashing me now. Right, Cass, this means war! Get out Mr. Road Hog again. This one is not getting away with it.”
“All right, all right.”
With a sigh, Cass undid her safety belt again. At the same moment, George slammed on her brakes, hurling Cass forward so hard she nearly gashed her head on the dashboard. “What are you doing?” she panted, as she heard the sound of screeching tyres and the hoot of an angry car horn behind them. “Are you trying to kill us all?”
“I’m teaching the sod a lesson!” George exclaimed. “Don’t tail-gate! Now for Lesson number two! Get Mr. Piggy through the roof while I’m driving nice and slowly!”
With some trepidation, Cass sat back down and pushed the placard through the roof, holding grimly onto it as the passing air pushed against it. Then, without warning, George gave a shriek of panic and drove off at high speed, causing a sudden jolt and wind rush that whisked the placard out of Cass’s hands. There followed a series of hideous crashes on the roof as the placard bounced across it, followed by more screeching brakes and swerving tyres behind them.
“What have you done….?” Cass squealed, but she was interrupted by the sound of a police siren. “Oh, no. You’re joking!”
“It’s not my fault! I didn’t notice it was a cop car until…. He was too close before ….Damn. I think he wants me to pull over…”
“Oh my God, it’s flashing its light and everything!” panted Cass, looking behind her in panic. “What are we going to do?”

We are participating in Boomer Lit Friday.

Boomer Lit Friday is a project by a Goodreads group to introduce readers to works of fiction of particular interest to Baby Boomers. These books feature characters in their fifties and sixties dealing with real life issues. Every Friday the Boomer Lit Friday Blog will list a selection of short, relevant excerpts for readers to enjoy.

This is an excerpt from the very beginning of The Crone Club:

The Crone Club Cover Final“So what have you achieved in your life, then?” Susan asked. Her sharp profile seemed poised almost to stab at Mary across the dinner table. “Come on, dear. Tell us all about your wonderful achievements.”
Cass looked on in guilty silence, despising herself for not speaking out. She wanted to defend Mary, but lacked the nerve. Susan’s sneering voice reminded her of all the bullying she had suffered at school and she felt like a self conscious, awkward teenager once again; the ‘fatty’ of the class. So she stayed silent, just like the rest of the table, and wished again that her old friend George would turn up. George would have given her the courage to stand up to Susan.
